Question for written answer E-002827/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Pietro Bartolo
Subject: Alleged refoulements from Greece to Turkey
Certain NGOs, such as Aegean Boat Report and Mare Liberum, and the Greek national (Efsyn) and local (Astraparis) daily newspapers, have reported that 14 migrants who landed on the island of Chios on 30 April were returned to Turkey by Greek coastguards.
So far as can be established, on 1 May, 14 people – corresponding in terms of number, origin and age to those observed on Chios – were subsequently found by the Turkish coastguard on the small uninhabited island of Bogaz.
In a parliamentary question, Greek Parliamentarian Andreas Michailidis has asked the Greek Government to explain the disappearance of these 14 migrants.
If it were to be confirmed that they had been returned in this way, that would be a very serious violation of the principle of non-refoulement and of European asylum rules.
In light of the above, can the Commission answer the following questions:
- Is it aware of this report?
- How will it respond if the report is confirmed?
- What practical measures will it take to prevent the coronavirus emergency from being used as a pretext to continue to disregard the right of asylum and to breach the principle of non-refoulement?
